Preparing wing venation slides of Microlepidoptera
Journal Title: Acta entomologica silesiana - Year 2015, Vol 23, Issue
Abstract
Preparing wing venation slides of Microlepidoptera. Wing venation in Microlepidoptera used to be an important factor governing taxonomic divisions. Today, too, analysis of wing venation frequently supports the taxonomic classification of specimens. The methodology of making wing venation slides has been described in many papers, albeit rather superficially. For staining, various substances are used but these can be costly and difficult to obtain. The present paper describes a simple, inexpensive method of preparing microscope slides of the wing venation of Microlepidoptera. Such slides can be used for detailed microscopic analysis and for preparing drawings of the venation. The method has also proved its worth in the case of the wings of the smaller species of Macrolepidoptera.
