PREVALENCE AND MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION OF ECHINOCOCCUS GRANULOSUS IN HUMANS AND SLAUGHTERED ANIMALS IN EGYPT

Journal Title: European Journal of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 9

Abstract

Echinococcus granulosus, hosted by humans and animals, impose serious human health risk and cause significant livestock production loss. It is widely seen endemically in the Middle East countries. The objective of this study was to investigate the disease epidemics in humans and livestock animals (camels, cattle, buffaloes, sheep, goat, pigs and donkeys) in Egypt. The study was conducted in The Great Cairo (Bassatein, El- Moneib abattoirs and the Giza Zoo), Upper Egypt (Dairout and Malawy abattoirs) and West Delta of Egypt (Alexandria, Kafr El Sheikh, and El-Behaira abattoirs), during the period from November 2015 to April 2017. Also, it concerned on studying only one male case of hydatid cyst pattern in hospitalized adult patients in El- Kasr EL- Einy hospital which lies in Cairo Governorate and considers as the biggest educational hospital in Egypt. Cysts status were examined microscopically and confirmed with a nested-PCR based on rDNA internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1-rDNA) to better understand the disease infection status in Egypt. The results revealed different rates of infection in the animals, with an overall hydatidosis prevalence, was (1137/ 7870) (14.4%). The highest incidence of infection was in sheep (331/ 1355) (24.4%) followed by goats (256/ 1322) (19.4%), pigs (26/ 137) (18.9%), camels (414/2212) (18.7%), and donkeys (70/503) (13.9%). However, the lowest rate of infection was recorded in cattle (37/ 1619) (2.3%) and buffaloes (3/ 722) (0.4%), respectively. The highest infected organ in the animals was the lung (66.1 %), while only 17.1 % had cysts in the liver. The prevalence of fertile cysts was 49.6% [356 (63.1%) viable and 208 (36.9%) nonviable], whereas the infertile cysts prevalence (sterile and calcified cysts) was 50.4%. This study confirms the predominance of the E. canadensis G6 (camel strain) in Egypt with the possibility of infecting this strain to humans.
