Prevalence and socio-demographic and clinical correlation of migraine in depressive disorder - A cross sectional study

Abstract

Introduction Studies have shown an association between migraine and psychiatric disorders like depression where a bidirectional etiology existsAim To study the prevalence of migraine among depressed patients and to correlate the severity of migraine and depressionMethodology The included 152 outpatients who were diagnosed with depressive disorder and recurrent depressive disorder using the ICD 10 diagnostic criteria They were then given the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale HAMD Migraine was diagnosed using the International Headache Society IHS diagnostic criteria of migraine and rated using the Migraine Disability Assessment Score MIDAS Data were analyzed using chisquare test independent sample t test and Pearsonrsquos correlationResults The study included 152 patients with depression There is a 355 prevalence of migraine was seen in depressed patients In 759 of cases migraine was previously undiagnosed There was a significant association between presence of migraine and female sex chi2 532 p002 student status chi2 15 plt0001 low socioeconomic status chi2258plt0001 current status of depression chi2545 p0015 severity of depression chi2383 p0023 nonpsychotic depression chi2236 plt0001 death wishes chi2218 plt0001 fewer episodes of depression t234 p002 and medical comorbidity chi2193 plt0001Conclusion The study clearly shows a high prevalence and nondetection of migraine in depressives and shows that nonpsychotic depression death wishes and medical comorbidity significantly predicts migraineKeywords Migraine Depression Headache MIDAS HDRS
