Prevalence and Socio-Demographic Determinants of Smoking among Men Rural Areas of Andhra Pradesh

Abstract

Context: Tobacco is the most important preventable cause of death and disease among adults. According to estimates made by the WHO, currently about 5 million people die prematurely every year in the world due to the use of tobacco, mostly cigarette smoking. More important is the fact that this epidemic of disease and death caused by tobacco is increasing very rapidly. Aims: 1. To study the prevalence of smoking among rural men aged 15 to 60 years in rural areas of Andhra Pradesh. 2.To study the socio demographic factors leading to smoking. Settings and Design: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among 242 rural men aged 15 to 60 years in rural areas, with the help of pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. Data were analysed using SPSS software 21 version. Methods and Material: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted among 242 rural men aged 15 to 60 years in rural areas, with the help of pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. Statistical analysis used: Data were analysed using SPSS software 21 version. Results: Out of 242 respondents the mean age of smokers, is 36.52 years and S.D. is 14.32, 85.54% were Hindus. The combined literacy rate was found to be 67.76%, 33.06% of the study group was unemployed. 187 of study group were living in in nuclear family and 148 were married. 207 of the study group were belong to below poverty line. Conclusions: This study concludes that the prevalence of smoking among study subjects of pedautapalli area was 28.52% .This prevalence was similar to reported prevalence (29.3%) by GATS 2010 in Andhra Pradesh but more than the prevalence reported in India by GATS study (24.3%)
