Prevalence and Trends ofTransfusion Transmitted Infections amongVoluntary Blood DonorsinaBlood Bank of Tertiary Care HospitalinNagpur, 2017-2021

Abstract

Background:Blood transfusion is an effective treatmentthat savesmillions of lives.Nevertheless, transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs)areamajor problem. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence andtrendsofTTI inhealthy blood donors in tertiary care hospitalblood banksandcompare itwith national data and other studiesindifferent regions.Methods:A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2017 to December 2021inhealthy donorsagedbetween 18 to 65years.TTIstestswereperformed usingCLIA (Chemiluminescent Immunoassay) for HIV, HBV,HCV,and HBsAg,and RPR (Rapid Plasma Rea-gin) forsyphilis.Results:Of the12,193 normal healthy donorsenrolledinthisstudy,124 (1.01%)donors weresero-reactive tovarious TTIs.Of the 124 donors, 11 (0.09%) were seropositive for HIV,13 (0.106%) forHCV,95 (0.7%) for HBsAg,and5 (0.04%) for VDRL. Therewerenoreactive donorsformalaria. The mostcommon age group forsero-reactivitywas 21–30years (50.8%) ofallseropositive donors.Conclusion:The overallpositive rate foralltest combinationsforTTI showedasteadytrendwith a gradual decreasefrom 2017 to 2021.Weshouldraisepublic awareness andtarget people in their 21s to 30s, and contributeto safe blood transfusion.
