Prevalence of Cancer in an Urban Cancer Centre in Western Odisha – A Retrospective Analysis

Abstract

Aim: The present study was undertaken to find the prevalence of head and neck cancer cases in comparison with total body malignancies in an urban cancer centre in Western Odisha. Material and methods: Our study was done in Radiotherapy Department of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMSAR), Burla of Sambalpur district, Odisha, India for a three year period from 1stapril 2014 to 31st march 2017. Total reported number of cancer prevalence during this period was 3181 out of which 464 were of carcinomas of head and neck. Results: We found that head and neck cancer prevalence in our three year study was 14.59% of total body malignancies. Males were more affected by head and neck cancers with 64.22% than females with 35.78%. The most affected age group was 51-60 with 26.51%, followed by 41-50 with 25.22%. Tongue cancer with 26.29% prevalence, was the most common cancer followed by Buccal Mucosa with 17.89%. The least affected cancers were carcinoma Nostril and Uvula each with 0.22%. Conclusion: This study of VIMSAR aims to evaluate retrospectively the prevalence of different cancer exposing higher incidences linked with appropriate aspects like geographical areas, sex and age for creating awareness and targeted solutions and calls for challenging, massive and meticulous statistical efforts.
