Prevalence of diabetes in patients with gallstones in Shahid Mohammadi Hospital of Bandar Abbas in 2014

Abstract
Introduction: Gallstone is among the most prevalent abdominal diseases worldwide which can have different covert reasons such as diabetes. The present research aimed to investigate the prevalence of diabetes among patients afflicted with a gallstone. Methods: The present descriptive, cross-sectional research was retrospective in nature and was conducted on 347 patients suffering from a gallstone in Shahid Mohammadi Hospital of Bandar Abbas between 2004 and 2013. The required data were collected through a checklist enquiring patients’ age, sex, type of diabetes, history of prior disease, smoking and so on derived from patients’ medical files. Independent-sample t test, Mann-Whitney u test, one-way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis analysis of variance were used to compare the mean scores in the research groups. Findings: The prevalence of disease was in the target research population was estimated as 18.2% (n=63). The majority of this population were afflicted with diabetes type II. The majority of subjects were above 50 years of age (n=167). According to t test findings, subjects’ age influenced their affliction with diabetes (p˂.001). Conclusion: Due to the high prevalence of diabetes among these patients, further research is suggested to investigate the correlation of diabetes and a gallstone.
