Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2019, Vol 6, Issue 30

Abstract

BACKGROUND We wanted to study the vertical transmission from seropositive mother to baby and determine the efficiency of anti-retroviral therapy and perinatal outcome in seropositive mothers. METHODS This is a prospective study done at GVH, Visakhapatnam to screen all antenatal women attending outpatient department from 2015 to 2018. 41659 cases were taken during a period of four years and out of them, 36350 were screened for HIV. They were followed till delivery and 18 months postpartum to determine the transmission rate and effectiveness of Nevirapine prophylaxis. RESULTS Out of the screened cases, 50 cases were found to be positive. Vertical transmission was studied and only 2 babies were found to be positive after 18 months out of 50 mothers. Hence the incidence of vertical transmission is found to be around 4%. Nevirapine prophylaxis was given to all the neonates of positive mothers. CONCLUSIONS With universal screening of HIV during pregnancy, ART can be started as early as possible. ART is recommended to all positive cases irrespective of the CD4 count and gestational age. Nevirapine prophylaxis is a safe and effective strategy to prevent infection in neonates. But timely follow-up is necessary.
