Prevalence of hypodontia in patients with various types of clefts

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2007, Vol 3, Issue 2

Abstract

AIM: to determine the prevalence of congenitally missingteeth in Polish children and young adults with differenttypes of cleft. MATERIAL & METHODS: panoramic radiographsof 219 cleft patients were used for assessing thenumber and distribution of dental agenesis. To comparethe frequency of hypodontia in and outside the cleft region, the involvement by cleft of the alveolar process has beenaccepted as a basis for dividing the material into two groups.Group A comprised 166 patients with clefts extended fromlip to the palate, including the alveolus. Group B was composedby 53 patients with isolated cleft of the lip or thepalate and unaffected alveolus. The chi-square test was appliedto evaluate the influence of the cleft extent and locationon the prevalence of hypodontia. Statistical significancewas established at p<0.05. RESULTS: in the whole materialthe prevalence of dental agenesis was 50.22%; in group increased to 24.52%. It seems that the incidence of hypodontiaincreases when the alveolar process is affected by developmentaldisorder. On the cleft side dental agenesis wasmore frequent than in the noncleft side. The overall incidenceof dental agenesis was higher in the maxilla than inthe mandible and the most common was agenesis of maxillarylateral incisor. CONCLUSIONS: the dental agenesisin cleft population is more frequent and affects differentthan normally types of teeth, creating additional problems inthe treatment planning. (Orthod.
