Prevalence of Signs and Symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders among Saudi Population - A Cross-sectional Study

Abstract
Background: This cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence of the signs and symptoms of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder (TMD) among Saudi patients with TMD symptoms. Methods: A total of 300 patients were screened; and of which 243 patients, 116 were males and 127 were females, with the age group of 15–30 years and above, who were randomly picked from the different school and colleges and also patients visiting the college of dentistry, King Khalid University, Abha, Saudi Arabia. A detailed questionnaire was distributed among the subjects asking about the presence of TMJ pain and related habits. The data obtained were compiled and statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software version 16.0. The P value was analyzed using the Pearson Chi-square test. Results: About 20 patients (7 male and 13 female, i.e., 8.23%) had pain in TMJ or related or facial region, with a P = 0.0015 which is statistically significant. Conclusion: Females with age group above 30 years had TMD signs and symptoms more frequently than males in the study population. The most common problem in both genders was pain.
