PREVALENCEOFTOXOPLASMOSIS AMONG DIABETIC PATIENTS

Journal Title: European Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Research - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 11

Abstract

Background: Toxoplasmosis is caused by the toxoplasma gondii parasite, the parasite is intracellular and can result in severe complications leading to death in immune-deficient patients. Diabetes is an important factor that increases susceptibility and risk of various infections in the host. Aims: To study the prevalence of toxoplasma gondii infection in diabetic patients and to determine the association between possible risk factors and toxoplasma seropositivity. Methods: Toxoplasma gondii antibodies were tested serologically in 50 patients of diabetic mellitus and 50 controls using ELISA technique. Results: The seropositivity for anti-toxoplasma IgG antibodies in the study groups was 46% in diabetic patients (Group I) and 24 % in control (Group II) with p-value = 0.03 showing a statistical significant difference between groups. While only 1 patient of diabetes type 1 group were positive for Anti-Toxo IgM with p-value = 1.0 showing no significant statistical difference between the 2 groups. Conclusions: The sero-prevalence of toxoplasmosis in diabetic patients was found to be comparatively higher than in non-diabetic patients. As long as the diabetes lowers the immune response, it may pave the way to toxoplasmosis so our hypothesis is that toxoplasmosis paves the way for diabetes and diabetes paves the way for toxoplasmosis but this depends on which one establishes first.
