Prices of generic drugs in public and private hospitals in Lima, 2007

Abstract
[b]Objetive: [/b]Compare the prices of generic drugs in pharmacies and drugstores peripheral to six hospitals in Lima with the selling prices of public pharmacies and determine the presence of these drugs in different private establishments. [b]Design:[/b] transversal study. [b]Setting:[/b] Held drugstores and private pharmacies to 6 peripheral hospitals in Metropolitan Lima (Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo, Hospital Nacional Arzobispo Loayza, Hospital Nacional Hipólito Unanue, Hospital Nacional Cayetano Heredia, Hospital Nacional Sergio Bernales, Hospital de Apoyo María Auxiliadora).[b] Participants:[/b] We evaluated so census 89 pharmacies and private pharmacies on the periphery of 6 hospitals in Lima. [b]Intervention:[/b] We compared the average price of 20 generic drugs in private versus drugs in public establishments and determined the presence or absence of these drugs in private establishments.[b] Main outcome measures: [/b]Share price differential, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and proof Z. [b]Results:[/b] We found price difference between 46% to 1412%, ANOVA found differences in 11 medication (p <0.05) for the hospital group. The Z test determined that the prices of public and private differ significantly (p <0.05); unlike the clorfenamina 4mg tab (p = 0.06). We found percentage differences for each hospital between 2800% and 46.6% compared to the prices. The average availability of drugs was 84.04%. [b]Conclusions:[/b] There is difference with the price of generic medicines in pharmacies and trace private pharmacies, there is availability of drugs in these establishments. The price difference is greater when compared with the public pharmacies.
