Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2012, Vol 65, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) is a very rare tumor occurring only in the bones of the jaws. According to the WHO classification PIOC is defined as Primary Intraosseous Squamous Cell Carcinoma – PIOSCC, arising within the bone, developmentally not associated with the oral mucosa and deriving from the remnants of the enamel organ. Despite its rare occurrence it cannot be ignored in the differential diagnosis in everyday clinical practice. The work is based on a literature review and observation of a patient treated at the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery and Implantology of Medical University of Warsaw. Aim of the study. The purpose of the paper is to present the observation, treatment and diagnostic procedures as well as differential diagnosis of a patient treated for primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC). The work is intended to alert physicians to the possibility of PIOC occurrence within the facial skull. Summary. Primary intraosseous carcinoma (PIOC) is very rarely diagnosed, but should always be taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of a jaw bone osteolysis. The treatment of intraosseous lesions as potentially malignant can result in earlier commencement of specialized treatment and reduction of the risk of metastasis.
