Probiotics in the prophylaxis and supportive treatment of selected proctological disorders – state of the art
Journal Title: Nowa Medycyna - Year 2015, Vol 22, Issue 1
Abstract
Studies on probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics are conducted in many fields of medicine, but most data that are available relate to their use in the human gastrointestinal tract. So far most publications describing these uses touch on the topics of diarrhoeas and inflammatory bowel disease. The aim of this article was a review of literature regarding the use of probiotics and synbiotics, containing lactobacilli, in proctology over the last five years to sum up state of the art applications of such preparations. Publications of clinical studies on adults were analysed, which touched the subject of their use in surgery and conditions of the colon and rectum, e.g.: pouchitis, diverticulitis, constipation, haemorrhoids, anal fistulas and fissures. Summing up, the best available evidence for their use may be found, next to acute diarrhoeas and inflammatory bowel disease, in: pouchitis, diverticulitis and perioperative prophylaxis for surgery of the colon. Furthermore, there should be more efforts made to better document the efficacy of probiotics and synbiotics in the prophylaxis and assisted treatment of proctological disorders by performing well planned randomized placebo controlled clinical studies on large groups.
