Journal Title: Przegląd Wschodni - Year 2014, Vol 13, Issue 50

Abstract

at the beginning of the second Polish republic, the Orthodox Church (in Poland) existed within the framework of the russian Orthodox Church and remained under the influence of the traditions of “Great russia”, something deeply ingrained in the minds of the clergy and the faithful. despite the fact that the majority of believers were Belarusians and ukrainians, the higher clergy was mainly composed of russians. during the second Polish republic, the Orthodox Church faced the challenges of finding its place within the new political situation and addressing its adherent’s national aspirations. the Polish authorities’ intent was to “de-russify” and “Polonise” the Orthodox Church, as well as for the Orthodox Church to develop an autocephalous based structure.
