Abstract
The article reflects the results of studies on the scientific rationale for the development of irrigation and increasing the productivity of irrigated land on a local and global level. It proves the necessity of expansion of irrigated lands and rational use of existing ones, with a view of the rational use of irrigation water, energy, technical means of agricultural production, human resources, increasing productivity, economic efficiency and environmental safety of irrigated agriculture.
