Journal Title: International Journal Of Management And Economics Invention - Year 2015, Vol 1, Issue 9

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to assess the pros and cons of implementing continuous assessment and remedial instruction and examine their effects on low-achieving students by distributing a structured questionnaire at Adigrat, Mekelle and Aksum University. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire from both the instructor’s side and students’ side from the three universities. Quantitative data analysis as well as qualitative data was carried out. The results of this study on CA show that instructors are not continuously collecting information about student progress, Small number of assessment is used in courses, few instructors give feed back at all, significant number of instructors and students have poor knowledge and negative attitude towards CA. On the other hand, the results of this study on remedial instruction show that remedial instruction is effective and beneficial to low academic achievers, the pre and post remedial programs, which met students’ needs and learning level. On top of this, student networking program, exam banks and peer learning groups was effective in terms of assisting weak students’ get a chance to discuss their academic problems and other issues. Based on the results, we can conclude and recommend that instructors need to use the results from CA as a means of identifying students’ progress and thereby providing support accordingly, department heads need to have a strong documentation and reporting systems, the maximum and minimum numbers of students in a class need to be set at a standard level and Concerned officials of the university need to closely examine the challenges mentioned and the recommendations forwarded by participants of the study. On the other hand, offering pre remedial classes on specific courses, putting tests on the exam banks, establishing and following student networking programs and peer learning groups, tutorial classes, providing consultation hours, ensuring classroom size, continuous assessment, encouraging students participation in the classroom and giving incentive pay for instructors have positive and significant effect on weak performer students academic performance and/or on the succession of remedial program. Therefore, enhancing the effects of CA and remedial instruction is a major issue of concern.
