Problems of Media Accountability in the Regional Periodical Press of Lithuania

Abstract
The article investigates the problems of media accountability responsibility) in the regional periodical press of Lithuania presenting the work of Lithuanian regional and local editorial offices as the research subject. The research is based on the theory of the social responsibility of mass media and is designed according to the model of the media accountability system created by the French scientist C. J. Bertrand. The novelty of the work consists of the analysis of regional and local periodical press work practice in 2000–2010 from legal and ethical aspects. This is the first research of this kind so far. The research is designed after the assessment of press functions and participants, as well as the market, law and ethics. A three-stage investigation, which would allow to analyze the problem in concern more thoroughly, was chosen in the attempt to determine how the Lithuanian regional and local mass media comply with the legal and ethical norms and also to identify the main determining reasons.
