Problemy prostytucji w międzywojennym Grudziądzu

Abstract
This article aims at presenting the problem of prostitution in Grudziądz in the interwar period. This issue was one of the sensitive social problems in Poland at that time. Due to the industrial character of the town and its garrison, this phenomenon became a kind of folkloristic feature of this town. On the one hand, prostitution was condemned by the society, but on the other accepted to some extend, which resulted from the double morality. The article aims at introducing the reason of this problem. The issues relating to prevention and combat against prostitution were merely mentioned, since my goal is to characterise the ways prostitution was exercised, the social valuation of it and the estimated number of women indulged in prostitution professionally. During the entire interwar period prostitution and criminal phenomena linked with it (pimping and pandering) posed a significant social problem of the town. Material and social disparities resulted in the „double face” of the epoch in Grudziądz. For some it was the time of never-ending pleasure, excessive quantities of alcohol and joyful songs (so-called żurawiejki), but for other people, such as prostitutes, it was the time of poorness and dwelling in slums of „Madera”.
