PROFESSIONAL PROMOTION – SELF-DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHERS OR UNNECESSARY BUREAUCRACY?

Abstract

In the history of educational reforms in Poland, we can observe repeated regularity – the resistance of teachers, especially if the changes concern themselves. We focus on the subject of career advancement and the related revision of the Teacher’s Charter. Teachers on the way to career advancement have to deal with problems. Teachers have difficulty with understanding many of the guidelines included in the Teacher’s Charter. They learn to be afraid of losing their job, not for the sake of their development, and they document their achievements and progress as collecting unnecessary papers. In the maze of complaints, you can find only a handful of votes praising the idea of promotion. By analyzing and comparing the various statements of teachers about the introduced changes, we try to resolve the question of whether professional promotion contributes to the development of teachers, or is just an unnecessary bureaucracy.
