Abstract

The article analyzes theoretically the professional responsibility problem in the context of the professional work of psychologists-practitioners. Research on the specifics of professional responsibility of practicing psychologists is important because of the fact that this personal resource plays a decisive role in the dynamics and effectiveness of psychological assistance. The essence of the concept of “professional responsibility” is analyzed in the article. Professional responsibility is the most significant structural component of any professional activity, which manifests itself specialists’ practical activities and has the personal, functional and subject-oriented aspects. The criteria of responsibility acceptance by a person are examined: consistency of the necessity with personal desires and needs (the responsibility is transformed into a personal sense); fulfilment of the necessary duties by a person using his/her own forces, independently and in accordance with the requirements imposed to himself/herself. Professional responsibility can be defined as a form of responsibility, a specialist’s psychological characteristic, reflecting the specialist’s attitude to the content and results of his/her professional work, promoting informed and qualitative performance of the professional duties, as well as readiness to answer for the professional actions to himself / herself, colleagues, the team and society. Professional responsibility is structurally organized as a synthesis of cognitive, motivational-affective and activity-behavioural components. The peculiarities of the professional work of psychologists-practitioners are discussed in the article. The peculiarities are related with specific interactions, interference into the psychic-spiritual life of another person, difficulties in prediction and regulation of the therapeutic process, a degree of professionals’ social and personal responsibility for their actions. Professional responsibility of psychologists-practitioners is defined as a personal-professional quality, which integrates the ethical and moral norms of behaviour and work, dictated by the subject characteristics and professional goals of practicing psychologists. The further research projects should cover the following themes: development of a structural-functional model of practicing psychologists’ professional responsibility; research on the formation of future psychologists’ responsibility during learning of psychological subjects.
