Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 7, Issue 20

Abstract

BACKGROUND Type II diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern in this modern day.1 The prevalence of diabetes is increasing rapidly worldwide, and the World Health Organisation predicted in the year 2003 that by 2030 the number of adults with diabetes would have almost doubled worldwide from 177 million in 2000 to 370 million. Aims and Objectives- To study the profile of different types of diabetic retinopathies in diabetic patients attending eye outpatient department in a tertiary care hospital of Kumaon region, Uttarakhand and to see the effect of associated risk factors on severity of diabetic retinopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS A hospital-based observational prospective clinical study in which 210 diabetic patients were examined at a tertiary care centre, Uttarakhand (Sushila Tiwari Memorial Hospital) in terms of clinical examinations, relevant investigations, treatment and were documented. RESULTS Percentage of diabetic retinopathy among study population was 59 percent, of which 12 percent were having mild NPDR, 24 percent had moderate NPDR, 15 percent had severe retinopathy and 8 percent patients had PDR. Mean age of patients in our study was 52 years. Severity of retinopathy was more in patients having long duration of diabetes, poor glycaemic control, hypertensive patients, patients suffering from dyslipidaemia and nephropathy. CONCLUSION It was concluded that duration of diabetes, poor glycaemic control, dyslipidaemia, nephropathy and hypertension affect and increase severity of diabetic retinopathy significantly while anaemia, CAD and smoking had relation with severity that was statistically not significant. There needs to be awareness of ocular involvement among diabetic individuals and an increased emphasis on regular ophthalmic examination in all diabetic patients for timely diagnosis of the vision threatening condition.
