Profile of Tuberculosis in AL-Diwanyah Governorate, Iraq

Abstract
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is considered one of the most important infectious diseases in the world and its incidence is on the rise. This retrospective study aimed to provide detailed information of the tuberculosis patients in AL-Diwanyah Governorate/Iraq. A total of 488 TB patients were involved in this study. The data related to current study were collected from the Advisory clinics for Chest Diseases located in six health sectors covering the geographical distribution of the AL-Diwaniya governorate. The number of female tuberculosis patients was 263 (53.89%) which was significantly higher than the number of male tuberculosis patients which was 225 (46.11%). In addition, 374 (76.64%) patients had pulmonary tuberculosis and 114 (23.36%) patients had extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. The percentage of pulmonary tuberculosis was significantly higher in patients older than 40 years and the percentage of extra-pulmonary TB was significantly higher in patients younger than 40 years (P < 0.05). The cure rate was significantly higher in patients with pulmonary TB than in extra-pulmonary TB patients. Treatment success was reported in 466 (95.49%) patients, death in 10 (2.05%), treatment failure in 7 (1.43%) and discontinuation of treatment in 5 (1.02%) patients. Their rate of pulmonary tuberculosis was significantly higher in diabetic than non-diabetic patients while the rate of cure was significantly higher in non-diabetic patients than in diabetic patients. Pulmonary tuberculosis was significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers. In conclusion, the rate of successful treatment is high and the rate of relapsed tuberculosis cases is lower among tuberculosis patients in AL-Diwaniya governorate. Socieodemographic factors significantly influence the profile of TB in AL-Diwaniya governorate.
