Prognostic Significance of The Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio in Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer

Journal Title: Kocaeli Tıp Dergisi - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 3

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Innumeroustypes of malignancy it is reported that high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is associated with poor outcomes. We aimed to investigate the prognostic significance of NLR in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer in our study. METHODS: Between January 2013 and December 2014, 40 patients with metastatic pancreas carcinoma were retrospectively reviewed. The association of NLR with progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) was analyzed using the Kaplan–Meier method. RESULTS: Forty patients were included in this study. The median age of patients was 58.5 years (range 44–80 years) and the majority ofpatients were male (75.0%). High NLR (≥3.45) were obtained in 21 patients. NLR was a significant prognostic factor for both OS and PFS. The median OS for patients with highand normal NLR was2.8 and 11.1 months, respectively (p <0.001). The median PFS for patients with high and normal NLR was1.6and 7.9 months, respectively (p <0.001). At the same time, PFS was significantly longer in male patients and those with a pancreatic head-located tumor. DISCUSSION and CONCLUSION: High NLR is a predictor of shorter OS and PFS in patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer. These results should be confirmed by prospective studies and multivariate analyses including more patients and other prognostic factors.
