PROPAGANDA AND PROPAGANDA-RELATED THOUGHTS AND EXPECTATIONS IN THE GRAND NATIONAL ASSEMBLY OF TURKEY (1920-1923)

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 50

Abstract

With the laws it introduced, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TGNA) basically aimed to eliminate the unjust actions against the national interests. Propaganda was among the ways to reach this aim, as the politics steered the military action and the war had a psychological dimension. The records of hearings include such statements as “our country is caught in a network of espionage in its entirety. The enemy owes all of its permeation and achievement to its perfidious, mephistophelian, and faithless propaganda”, which indicates that one of the most efficient weapons of hostile powers then was propaganda. This study is based on the records of TGNA hearings, as they include all speeches and behaviours during the activities of the assembly and they provide information about the political circumstances of that time. We have made use of literary works and researches as well. The study aims to analyse the approaches of the TGNA members with respect to the concept of propaganda and to figure out how the national independence struggle ended successfully.
