PROSODIC MEANS OF EXPRESSING EMOTIONAL INTENSITY IN THE SPEECH OF SPORTS COMMENTATORS

Abstract

The given paper is dedicated to the investigation of prosodic means responsible for emotional intensity perception. By means of perceptive analysis it was stated that speech loudness and tempo are main prosodic markers of emotional intensity perception. Human speech is capable of expressing practically any emotion and contains information for successful identification of expressed emotions. Emotional intensity is characteristics of oral speech in the process of its perception. So the aim of the article is to define identifying prosodic markers of emotional intensity sections in the speech of football reporter. The main task of football reporters is to comment on the developing dynamically events on the football field and to evaluate, to attract and hold up audience's attention, to cause emotional reaction of the listener. Football commentary is a quasispontaneous monologue and its specific feature is that it reconstructs a chain of events in its succession, which is complicated by strict time frames and maintenance of uninterrupted speech flow. Thus, the conducted perceptive analysis allowed to reveal certain prosodic means which are responsible emotional intensity perception in the spontaneous speech of football reporters. They are speech tempo and loudness: the higher the degree of loudness the slower the tempo of speech is.
