PROSPECTING FOR CONCEALED AND HIDDEN MINERAL DEPOSITS IN POLAND RESULTS AND POSSIBILITIES

Journal Title: Biuletyn Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego - Year 2010, Vol 439, Issue 439

Abstract

Security of supply of mineral commodities is the basic concern of European Union. The present knowledge of geology makes low possibilities of discovery new deposits by grassroots prospecting. Prospecting of concealed and hidden deposits should be the main target. Systematic prospecting for mineral deposits were realized by Polish Geological Institute. The areas of occurrence of known mineral deposits were successfully investigated. Detailed analysis of geological data allow to start prospecting for concealed and hidden deposits with the use of geophysical methods and drilling, which were reworded by discoveries of eminent deposits of coal (Lublin basin), copper ore, sulphur, V–Ti–Fe and Mo–W–Cu. The conceptual basis for prospecting (geological backgrounds and proper choice of expected deposit model) is the most important. The areas promising for prospecting for new hidden or concealed deposits are Sudetic Mts. (metasomatic and intragranitic uranium, metasomatic Sn, W greisen, SEDEX Cu), NE border zone of Upper Silesia Block (porphyry and skarn Mo–W–Cu),border zone of the Holy Cross Mts. (sandstone-hosted Pb). The more detailed basic geological investigation is necessary in Fore-Sudetic block and Eastern Sudetes, under Meso-Cenozoic cover (possible occurrence of Cu–Zn–PbSEDEXdeposits). The possibilities of occurrence of ore deposits in the Carpathian Mts. should be revised (porphyry Cu, epithermal Au). The basement of East-European Platform is not recently interesting for prospecting due to deep setting.
