Journal Title: Українознавство - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue 69

Abstract

The article describes the prospects for memorialization of the 1932–1933 Holodomor genocide theme in the context of museum space creation. The theoretical aspect of this problem should be considered in the framework of “memorial paradigm” of the social studies and humanities, as well as “memory studies”, which constitute a very important part of the interdisciplinary approach. The practical aspect of this issue is related to creating, functioning, and prospects for the development of the innovational integrative platform for preserving the knowledge about Holodomor – the genocide of Ukrainians. This platform is based on the cooperation of expositional, projective and technical, scientific, research and educational components. Collaboration of these components defines conceptual filling of the museum as a universe; forms not only an institution but a museum environment as a “living” space, which possesses potential for development and a great informational-emotional power. This article draws attention mostly to an important role of a museum as a space for memorial embodiment of the collective memory about tragic events of Holodomor genocide of Ukrainians in 1932–1933. National Museum “Holodomor Victims Memorial” team is working on constructing such kind of space. This museum carries not only national and cultural-educational mission but also civilizing purpose by moving towards the model for organizing (post)contemporary global memory. The article examines memorialization potential of the museum space in close connection with “Holodomor Victims Memorial” work as an institution which directs all its efforts towards the comprehensive research and re-thinking of the tragic events of 1932–1933 in the Ukrainian history, preservation and reconstitution of collective memory about genocide of the Ukrainian nation, thus forming the new local narratives about global phenomenon of the world history.
