Przemysł taboru szynowego w Polsce
Journal Title: Technika Transportu Szynowego - Year 2017, Vol 282, Issue 9
Abstract
The railway in Poland was the basis for the transport of people and goods before 1989. At that time, the importance of the development of heavy industry and the transport of steel and hardcoal caused that the golden age of railway in Poland was much longer than in Western European countries. A smallnumber of private cars caused the railway to be regarded as the basis of the country’s transport system, but it was heavily overloaded and chronically under-invested. The realities of the free-market economy after 1989 were, on the one hand, a new impetus for development, i.e. availability of modern technologies, but the decline of heavy industry - iron works, coking plants or hard coal mines meant a drastic decrease in the mass transport of rail freight. The PKP restructuring process after 2000, as well as EU membership since 2004, has greatly improved the condition of railways in Poland - the revival of the rail industry, new orders - initially for light diesel vehicles, later for electric motor units or tramways of the new generation has been began. These vehicles were manufactured by Polish producers, or produced in Poland, also for export. Railway network revitalization has also started, with significant support with EU funds. Beginning of Pendolino exploitation on the PKP network became a symbol of the qualitative and technological progress in railways in Poland after 1989.
