Journal Title: Przewodnik Lekarza - Year 2005, Vol 79, Issue 7
Abstract
The aim of this article is to review the current stage of the knowledge about psoriasis. The role of the immune system was pointed out in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Psoriasis is an inflammatory/autoimmune disease and has a tremendous impact on patients’ lives, affecting them physically, psychologically, and socially. This review addresses the problems of defining severity of psoriasis and to discuss the treatment. Traditional treatments for moderate-to-severe psoriasis include phototherapy, methotrexate, oral retinoids, and cyclosporine. Traditional agents although providing excellent short-term control, may produce acute or chronic toxicities, thus limiting their usage. Biologic treatments significantly improve the quality of life of psoriasis patients; however, they cost significantly more than traditional therapies.
