Psychology in medicine Part 1 – cognitive deficits in patients after stroke

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction: In contemporary times, increasingly more frequently cerebral stroke is the cause of physical, cognitive and emotional impairments among population aged over 55. Neuropsychological deficits experienced by patients after a stroke considerably hinder their daily functioning, sometimes even in spite of the absence of motor deficits. Patients whose quality of life is dramatically reduced due to the perceived emotional and cognitive deficits, are often not aware that their condition can also be improved, and consequently they do not receive assistance. Objective: The objective of the study was dissemination of knowledge concerning the nature of cognitive impairments in patients after a stroke, among primary care physicians.Brief description of the state of knowledge: Neuropsychology is a branch of science that is still dynamically developing, although many medical circles are still convinced about the superiority of senso-motor rehabilitation over rehabilitation of cognitive functions.Summary: The presence of cognitive deficits in patients after a stroke may not only considerably inhibit the recovery process, but in some cases even make it impossible. On the other hand, cognitive impairments sometimes occur despite the absence of physical deficits. Patients experiencing this type of disorder, as well as their families, are often unaware of the possibility of obtaining assistance. Therefore, the dissemination of knowledge about the nature of cognitive function among primary care physicians will reach out to patients who have not had the opportunity to participate in the diagnosis and neuropsychological rehabilitation, despite the fact that they are eligible.Key words: stroke, cognitive impairment, neuropsychology
