PSYCHOSOCIAL CAPACITY FOR GOAL ACHIEVEMENT IN TEAM

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 3

Abstract

Background. The paper was aimed at elucidating the phenomenon of gaining advantage in team disciplines and the explanation of discrepancy between potential abilities of players and real outcome which is often worse than “cumulated” resultant of particular abilities.Material and Methods. The study involved three teams: volleyball, handball and basketball (N-51). Carron’s Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) was used to measure team cohesion, Zawadzki and Strelau’s Temperament Inventory (FCZ-KT) as well as Mroczkowska’s I-E Scale were used to measure failure attribution. Results. Statistically significant differences in task-social cohesion between volleyball, handball and basketball teams were observed. Basketball and handball teams were more similar in this respect than was volleyball team, and players of the first two teams rated integration around task as well as closeness and emotional relationship significantly higher than volleyball players. In team characterised with lower cohesion (volleyball) the phenomenon of resignation from seeking reserve physical abilities was noted. Players with strong sense of team integrity showed significantly better reaction time, fatigue and stress resistance than players with weak sense of task-social integrity.Conclusions. Mutual feedback of psychophysical capacity components (stress resistance, fatigue resistance, reaction time) facilitates risky actions during play more than it would be indicated by a simple sum of particular players’ abilities. Internal responsibility for failure in team strongly integrated around task rises the risk threshold. Whatsmore, it is concluded, that the greater the scope of disintegrating rival reactions and the higher the number of actions increasing the risk of injury, the more increased integration inside team and with the team.
