Public Relations as Storytelling of Our Times: An Analysis of Biographies of Vehbi Koç
Journal Title: Moment Dergi - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 2
Abstract
In recent years, cultural approach to public relations, which is an alternative to functional/managerial approaches, has been challenging the assertion that public relations is a management function. Cultural approach is grounded on the idea that public relations has a cultural function, thus it is closely related to the meaning-making processes in society. Therefore, cultural approach argues that public relations is a form of narrative, even a storytelling, and public relations professionals function as today’s storytellers. Based on the claim that public relations is today’s storytelling practice, this study establishes a theoretical connection between public relations and storytelling. Within this framework, this study examines how popular biographies play a role in making organizational narratives. Accordingly, the biographies of Vehbi Koç published in Koç Holding’s corporate magazine, Bizden Haberler, are chosen for the sampling and analyzed by document analysis method. In those biographies- regarded as a part of Koç Holding’s public relations practices- Vehbi Koç, in addition to being a patriotic person, is represented as a hardworking bussinessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist, traditional, thrifty and a humble person.
