Punjabi Reference Sources: A Descriptive Guide

Journal Title: Library Progress International - Year 2018, Vol 38, Issue 2

Abstract

Reference sources are tools which provide readymade, cut and dried bits of information on various fields of knowledge for the researchers. These are not only essential to save the precious time of the researchers, but also work as catalyst to boost and speed up research in the discipline. This work under review systematically identifies lists, organizes and critically describes more than 500 reference sources written in Gurumukhi script. It is the first such effort in Punjabi language to take stock of such sources of information to bring these to the notice of scholars and researchers in Punjabi literature and Sikh religion. The book has been divided into12 chapters in addition to the thirteenth which is an addenda. The preface both in English and Punjabi describes in poetic –prose the importance of knowledge and the need of reference sources. The first chapter describes the nature and types of reference sources. Rest of the text allots a chapter each to various sources by form such as bibliographies, dictionaries, directories, glossaries, subject dictionaries, dictionaries of thoughts and quotations, encyclopedias biographical, geographical and statistical sources. The chapter nine is devoted exclusively to about ninety sources on various facets of Sikh religion and scriptures—though some of them are also listed in other chapters such as bibliographies and directories. Each chapter has been further divided into sections to bring related sources together. Not only is this, cross references to other related sources profusely given to link related sources. Each entry provides full bibliographical details along with ISBN of the book if given. Full URL of the source is given if the book is available online in open access free to read and download. Critical description and scope of the source is mentioned in each entry. This work is technically sound from the cataloguing and indexing viewpoints. At the end are given author, title (both in Punjabi and English) and subject indexes. These are useful to locate the required information from the book. It is thus a model reference tool in itself. It is amazing that so many tools are there in Punjabi language, but it remains to be seen or needs some research to know the extent of their use among the scholars, students and teachers. Nevertheless this book will inspire the documentation of such sources in other Indian vernacular languages.
