PUTTING THE UPPSALA MODEL AGAINST THE WALL: THE CHALLENGES POSED BY THE RISE OF EMNES

Journal Title: European Journal of Business and Social Sciences - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 2

Abstract

Purpose: The rise of emerging multinational enterprises (EMNEs) puzzled international business scholars and challenged the validity of the well-established stream of thoughts in the international business community, hence, the purpose of this paper is to put the Uppsala model up against the wall in order to probe its ability to explain this phenomenon. Methodology: Three well-known databases – Scopus, ProQuest and Web of Science – were used. Keywords queried were: (1) Uppsala Internationalization (2) Internationalization model (3) (Uppsala Internationalization model) and (Emerging OR Market) and (4) Emerging Market Multinational. Of the 641 hits, 286 were duplicates. After an in-depth analysis of the 355 remaining studies, 23 were analyzed Findings: A search in the specialized literature indicates that studies in the internationalization of EMNEs are mainly focused in Asian and East European companies. Results indicate that most studies either support or partially support the use of the Uppsala model to explain the rise of EMNEs. Hence this conceptual paper suggests that the Uppsala model can explain the rise of EMNEs, now understood as emerging market multinational business enterprises (EMMBEs) Originality: This conceptual paper organizes the trajectory of the Uppsala Model splitting it into: the classic and network perspective and the MBE era. Thus, we hope to contribute in an attempt to organize the thinking behind the evolution of the Uppsala model. This paper also presents the EMME contingent Uppsala model in order to address the call of Aharoni (2014) for a contingent theory.
