QT corrected and QTc dispersion across different phases of menstrual cycle- A cross-sectional study

Journal Title: Indian Journal of Clinical Anatomy and Physiology - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction The gonadal hormones accompanying the menstrual cycle in a female affect the ventricular repolarization regionally in the cardiac muscle as well as affects its recovery time both of which are QTc AND QTd measured conventionally using a noninvasive ECG A prolonged QTc and QTd are predictors of cardiac morbidity and mortalityAim The aim of the present study was to examine whether the cardiac ventricular repolarization is altered during different phases of menstrual cycle by the endogenous gonadal hormonesMaterials and Methods Thirty eumenorrhic females were examined using 12 lead ECG during the follicular and luteal phases of menstrual cycleStatistical Analysis Data was analysed statistically using students paired ttestResults It was observed that the heart rate in follicular phase was 788 748 while in luteal 84 817 RR interval in follicular was 82589 while in luteal phase was 77369 QT interval in follicular was 039009 while in luteal phase was 033008 QTc in follicular was 043003 while in luteal phase was 039003 QTd in follicular was 67 230 while in luteal phase was 58408Conclusion We hence elucidate interactions between the sex steroids and cardiac conduction dynamics which is characterized by a prolonged QTc and QTd during the follicular phaseKeywords Endogenous Gonadal Menstrual cycle Repolarization
