Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2015, Vol 2, Issue 2
Abstract
Context : Public health education, to make the people aware of preventive aspects of the disease is important, which is one of the agenda for operational research under Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program (RNTCP). Aims: To explore the perceptions and practices among women regarding tuberculosis, its diagnosis and treatment facilities in rural Pondicherry through Focus Group Discussions (FGD), which will help to develop the locally relevant health education material. Methods and Material: Three Focus Group discussions (FGDs) were conducted among non-TB individuals till the saturation point i.e. when no new information was yielded. FGD data was transcribed in English, manually coded and analyzed over a period of two months. Results: The manual content analysis of the FGD data was done. The four broad categories that emerged from FGD data are, 1) what is known about tuberculosis? 2) What can lead to tuberculosis? 3) What is done when tuberculosis occurs? 4) Perception on treatment, preference and problem. Conclusions: Further research is needed to strengthen this locally relevant need-based health education material and to develop this into flip book for health education of community members.
