Quality in the Theory and Practice of Organisation Management

Abstract

The article presents the development of quality since ancient times up to nowadays. Examples of defining the concept of quality in different periods of time and in sciences has been provided, giving particular attention to definitions applied in the theory of organisation and management. It has been described how thinking about quality developed with time, from early interpretations to understanding complex concepts and quality management systems. In the paper particular attention has been given to dynamic development of interest in quality in management sciences in the second half of the 20th century, and the sources of increased efforts of researchers and practicing managers to better understand the mechanisms of quality affecting organisational processes have been identified. In the article selected aspects of quality in the context of their present meaning and influence on management and functioning of contemporary organisations have been presented. The existence of discrepancies between the standpoints of researchers on the role and significance of quality for organisational practice has been indicated. Nevertheless, it has been shown, that in the management science quality is perceived as an element of building permanent competitive advantage and quality management is seen as an indispensable component of organisation management philosophy. Attention has been paid to the presence of barriers to implementing the quality management concept in organisational practice. Paper presents arguments for continuing research and developing knowledge on quality in order to be able to apply it in organisational practice in a more comprehensive way.
