Quality of life assessment after artificial cardiac pacemaker

Journal Title: Revista Eletronica de Enfermagem - Year 2011, Vol 13, Issue 4

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the quality of life (QOL) of patients after artificial cardiac pacemaker (PM) implantation in a small city of Goiás/Brazil. This is a before-after trial. Twenty-three patients were evaluated before and after PM implantation. The instruments used were AQUAREL and SF-36. Most of patients were female (65%) with a mean age of 64.9 years, and low formal education (43%). The areas of AQUAREL with better QOL were chest discomfort (M = 71.60) and arrhythmia (M=70.87); the lower areas were exercise dyspnea (M = 61.81). Comparing QOL before and after PM implantation according to SF-36, there was significant improvement in the areas: physical functioning, pain, general health and emotional and social aspects. Globally, the results of SF-36 indicated improvement in quality of life after PM implantation
