Quality of Life in Patients with Diabetes and Hypertension in Karnataka- An Observational Study

Abstract

Background: Diabetes and Hypertension due to their chronic nature and multi-systemic involvement may affect the quality of life of the patients. Objective: To assess the quality of life among patients with diabetes and hypertension patients. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in 100 patients with diabetes, hypertension or both, who came to primary care clinics. An interview was conducted using WHO BREF questionnaire to assess the quality of life among them. Results: The overall quality of life was good in 25% of the patients. About one third (33%) of the participants were satisfied with their health status. Psychosocial domain had a significantly lower score than other domains. The overall quality of life as well as the individual domain scores was comparable (p = 0.68) among diabetics (2.8 ± 0.91), hypertensives (2.7 ± 0.92) or having both (2.6 ± 0.91). Conclusion: Most of the participants irrespective of the disease had an average to poor quality of life. The social aspect was least affected and the psychosocial aspect was the most adversely affected domain in the quality of life of the patients.
