Quality of Life of Cognitively Impaired Older Adults Living in Community

Abstract

Quality of life (QOL) conveys an overall sense of well-being, including aspects of happiness and satisfaction with life as a whole. With graying scenario worldwide, knowing about the QOL is important to developing future strategies for enhancing the same. The study aimed at finding QOL among community dwelling urban older adults from Lucknow. Two randomly selected urban localities (Musahibganj & Jankipuram) of Lucknow were visited for data collection in a consecutive series. Out of 7351 homes visited and 1888 elderlies were identified. Of them the first 300 consecutively recruited persons fulfilling inclusion & exclusion criteria constituted the study sample. They were screened by HCST (Hindi Cognitive Screening Test) in such a way that 75 persons from either of the sexes with HCST positive (Score less than or equal to 23) and Negative scores (Score more than 23 ) scores were considered for analysis. World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) was administered to assess QOL. The results revealed that there was significant difference between QOl of normal and cognitively impaired older adults. QOL in physical, psychological and social domains were found to be significantly poor amongst cognitively impaired individuals.
