Rabbit growth performance, carcass traits and hind leg bone characteristics as affected by the sire breed, season, parity order and sex in an organic production system
Journal Title: Animal Science Papers and Reports - Year 2014, Vol 32, Issue 2
Abstract
Live performance, carcass traits and hind leg bone characteristics of crossbred rabbits of both sexes (Sx) of two sire breeds (SB): Vienna Blue – (VB) and Burgundy Fawn – (BF) born with different parity orders (P: 1, 2, ≥3), reared organically and slaughtered in the spring and summer, when they reached 2.8 kg, were evaluated. The slaughter age of VB crossbreds increased between P1 and P2 (P<0.05). During the summer, the rabbits exhibited a higher slaughter age (P<0.01), reference carcass yield (P<0.01), and hind leg meat-to-bone ratio (P<0.05). The P2 crossbreeds exhibited the lowest incidence of scapular fat (P<0.05). The weights of the full gastrointestinal tract and skin were 2.4% higher and 1.5% lower in females, respectively (P<0.01), and head proportion was higher in males (P<0.05). Females exhibited a longer femur and thicker tibia than did the males (P<0.05). The results confirmed the slow growth rate of the crossbreds evaluated, which may represent an interesting genetic resource for organic production of rabbits.

Sensitivity and specificity of high-resolution melting analysis in screening unknown SNPs and genotyping a known mutation
High-resolution melting analysis (HRMA) was used to screen potential SNPs in the exons of chicken CAPN1 (μ-calpain/large subunit) gene. A total of 312 DNA samples from Beijing-you chickens were used for detection. Twelve...
Effect of management change on selected welfare parameters of cows
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of relocation from a tie-stall barn to the facility with free-stall housing on adaptation of cows measured by behaviours latency and lenghts of the first episodes. Cows w...
Profiles of oestradiol, testosterone and androstenedione in stable vs. forest born young Konik Polski horses
Blood plasma profiles of equine sex steroids are useful in diagnose and for different scientific purposes. The aim of this study was to monitor oestradiol, testosterone and androstenedione blood plasma profiles in foals...
Differential growth of skeletal muscle in mice selected divergently over 108 generations for low and high body weight
Experiments were performed on 180 mice from two lines dubbed light (L) and heavy (C), selected divergently for body weight over 108 generations. The main hypothesis was that the changes occurring in body weight and muscl...
SLC27A1 SNPs in relation to breeding value of milk production traits in Polish Holstein-Friesian cows
The aim of the study was to investigate associations between SLC27A1 genotypes and estimated breeding value of milk production traits (milk, fat and protein yield, kg; fat and protein content, %) in the Polish Holstein-F...
