Радіоекологічні дослідження у лісових екосистемах України [Radioecological investigations in forest ecosystems of Ukraine]

Abstract

Before Chernobyl accident there were neither normative documents nor recommendations which could regulate working conditions at forestries to ensure radiation safety, as well as there were no measures on forestry activities in the conditions of radiation contamination and no regulations on the forest resources use on the territories contaminated by radionuclides. Research investigations conducted in the forest ecosystems in Ukraine can be generalized into three directions: study of forest radiation contamination features; study of radionuclides migration in the main types of forest soils in Polissia and in the right coast Forest-Steppe; study of radionuclides total activity distribution in the components of forest ecosystems; development of the radionuclides migration models in forest ecosystems to make prognosis of radioactive contamination of these ecosystems’ components; study of radionuclides redistribution in forest ecosystems after forest fires, as well as after forest cultural works and logging; study of radionuclides migration in the system – “soil – fodder plants – wild hoofed animals” and detection of the features of radiation contamination of hoofed animals’ organs and of some industrial birds; study of sanitary-hygienic working conditions in the process of forestry activity on the radiation contaminated territories; identification of the features of radionuclides accumulation in major forest forming tree species; radionuclides distribution in tree’s parts and organs under different levels of soil radioactive contamination in different forest conditions; study of the features of radionuclides accumulation in wild berries and medicinal plants in Polissia forests and in the right coast Forest-Steppe under different levels of soil radioactive contamination in different forest conditions; study of features of radionuclides accumulation in fruit bodies of edible mushrooms under different levels of soil radioactive contamination in different forest conditions; radionuclides contamination of fodder plants in forest pastures and hayfields; development of forestation technologies on the territories with high levels of soil radioactive contamination; study of possible reduction of wood radioactive contamination in the process of technological processing; development of the method to estimate losses the forestries suffered from after Chernobyl accident. The conducted studies allowed developing “Recommendations on the forestry activity in the condition of radiation contamination”. It was the first document to regulate forestries activity on the territories contaminated by radionuclides after Chernobyl accident. “Interim recommendations on environment-forestry measures in 30 km Chernobyl zone forests” were worked out to regulate forestries functioning in 30 km Chernobyl zone.
