Rare Variation of the Median Nerve in the Cubital Fossa

Journal Title: Scholars International Journal of Anatomy and Physiology - Year 2018, Vol 1, Issue 4

Abstract

The median nerve crosses the anterior aspect of brachial artery in the mid-third of the arm and descends medially to the cubital fossa. The structures in the cubital fossa from medial to lateral side are median nerve, brachial artery, biceps tendon and radial nerve. During regular academic dissection in the Anatomy unit, Faculty of medicine, AIMST University, Malaysia, we encountered a rare unilateral variation in the position of median nerve in the cubital fossa. The nerve lies lateral to the brachial artery deep to bicipital aponeurosis and anterior to the brachialis muscle. This kind of variation is very rarely quoted in the literature. Neuropraxia may happen to the median nerve due to brachial artery damage during any catheterization procedure.
