Reaction (pH) of the peat at the upper horizon of Wołosate peat bog and its surroundings (Bieszczady National Park)
Journal Title: Roczniki Bieszczadzkie - Year 2012, Vol 20, Issue 1
Abstract
Raised peat-bogs are placed on a special position among the natural habitats. The Wołosate peat bog, located in the Bieszczady National Park (Western Bieszczady Mountains), is an example of ombrotrophic, raised peat bog. According to approved protection plan land melioration focused on the water level elevation within the northern and north-eastern part of the peat bog were done. Due to this works the fragments of peat bog edge was partially flooded as a result of creation of minor water reservoirs (Fig. 1). The aim of the study was to measure pH of soils of the Wołosate peat bog. The research were based on measurements of soil pH in the 11th transects (Tab. 1, 2; Fig. 2, 3, 4) as well as the analysis of the chemical properties of water samples collected from water reservoirs adjacent to the peat bog (Tab. 3). The values of the pH of the Wołosate peat bog soils are highly acidic and thus they are characteristic for ombrotrophic, raised peat bogs (Tab. 1; Fig. 5). pH analysis of the Wołosate peat bog soils as well as water samples analysis, do not indicate the problem of eutrophication.
