REASON FOR PISTON SEIZURE DURING RELIABILITY TESTING OF AN IC ENGINE
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2014, Vol 254, Issue 2
Abstract
This paper describes the reason of seizure of the pistons of a CE engine with spark ignition, 1.6 liter capacity, during reliability test. We analysed the microstructure, operation life, hardness and size and shape of the pistons made of an alloy AlSi12. Durable piston material dimensional changes helped to determine the technological ageing temperature lower than 200°C. The seizure of the piston was due to swelling of the material. The analysis of changes in the microstructure, hardness, and size made it possible to adopt 225–230°C as the maximum operating temperature of the pistons. The initial seizure of the piston starts at the crown and the piston skirt, and seizure is a secondary effect.

IMPACT OF ADHESION AND VISCOSITY FORCES ON FRICTION VARIATIONS IN BIO-TRIBOLOGICAL SYSTEMS
The classical theory of lubrication holds that the lubricant dynamic viscosity increments cause the increments of hydrodynamic pressure, as well as friction forces and wear. In the case of high values of hydrodynamic pre...
