Reasonable Adjustments in the Workplace: A Preliminary Study of Inclusive Prevention

Journal Title: Revista CEA - Year 2022, Vol 8, Issue 18

Abstract

This study aims to describe the reasonable adjustments implemented by companies in Ibagué, Colombia, to favor the work inclusion of persons with disabilities and their influence on occupational hazard prevention. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was adopted. The participants were 23 employees and five employers in said city. Two instruments were applied: (1) a survey implemented in the quantitative stage of the study to characterize and select participants and (2) semi-structured interviews conducted during the qualitative stage. The results of the latter, which are the basis of this study, were analyzed using two general categories: reasonable adjustments and inclusive prevention. The findings show that most reasonable adjustments are adaptations that workers have made to perform better at their job, and only at big companies the modifications and/or adaptations are made by employers following the national regulations established for that purpose. In addition, employers and employees have very different perceptions of inclusive prevention. The former focus on physical aspects of risks, while the latter are more concerned with social aspects of the work environment. Finally, attitudinal and communication barriers are the main risk factors in the workplace.
