Reconfigurable Compact Circular Monopole Antenna with Defected Patch Structure for Cognitive Radio Applications

Abstract

With development of communication technology, size reduction of microstrip antenna is becoming an important design consideration for practical applications. The proposed microstrip-feed antenna mainly consists of a compact circular monopole antenna (CMA) with defected patch structure and two conducting rectangular strip parallel to feed line for cognitive radio application is presented. The design considerations for achieving wideband and reconfiguration operation of the proposed antenna are discussed. Ground plane is shaped so that they can simultaneously satisfy the requirement of impedance matching with 50ohm transmission line. The proposed antenna uses FR-4 substrate having thickness of 1.6mm and dielectric constant of 4.4. This antenna achieves an enhanced impedance bandwidth of 184.12 %. Most of the work in cognitive radio domain has been done in the frequency range of 3.1GHz to 10 GHz, but this paper presents a circular monopole antenna operating over frequency band of 800MHz to 15GHz. The proposed antenna suitable for cognitive radio applications was designed and analyzed by using software HFSS 13.0 which is based on finite element modeling (FEM). Antenna performance parameters such as antenna gain, return loss, VSWR over the operating bands have been observed and found to be well within the expected range.
