Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems – An Emerging Manufacturing Paradigm
Journal Title: Journal of Advanced Research in Electronics Engineering and Technology - Year 2018, Vol 5, Issue 1
Abstract
The Paper outlines the evolution of manufacturing paradigms, from a dedicated manufacturing system to a state of the art Reconfigurable Manufacturing system (RMS). Each manufacturing paradigm evolved to fulfill certain aims and objectives which were defined by the challenges posed by the market requirements during contemporary periods. In this fast changing competitive era, new product types/styles are demanded with ever shortening life cycles. The cost and time involved in designing, procuring and installing altogether a new manufacturing system, every time a new product is to be introduced is highly exorbitant. RMS’s offer to reuse and reconfigure the components of original system into a new manufacturing system, eliminating the need to install a new system or completely reorganize the existing one. The concept of Reconfigurable Manufacturing System is further explored and elaborated in the present market context and the key features characterizing the RMS are enumerated. Finally the technical challenges to realize RMS’s are surveyed to identify research issues addressing various aspects of ongoing evolution of RMS’s.
