Abstract

Introduction: To evaluate and compare the results of treatment of distal end extra articular radialfractures with either closed reductionwithpopcastingorclosed reductionwithk-wiring. Patient And Methods: Acomparative, prospective, observational and randomised study was conducted on distal end extra articular radiusfracture treatedwith either popcasting or K-wiring underCarm(25 cases each), admitted in departmentof orthopaedics,Rajindra hospital, attached to governmentmedical college,Patiala. Patientswere followed upfor6monthsandfunctionaloutcomewasevaluatedusingGartlandandWherleyfunctionalscoringsystem. Results: In thisstudyweobtained good to excellentresultsin 18 ofthe casesmanagedwith pop castingwhile in 24 cases treatedwithkwiring showed goodto excellentresultswithp-value 0.00054 (byOneWay ANOVAtest),which is statistically significant. We conclude that K wiring is an effective and reliablemethod withminimal complications and betterfunctionalendresultsthannon-operativemethodoftreatmentfordistalendextraarticularradiusfractures.
